- Seedling, how do you make sure your pop music stays true to your unique style while also appealing to a wide audience?
I’m still very much figuring out my unique style so it’s a bit of trial and error, to be honest! I guess I hopeto create a pop that isn’t too flashy but gets people feeling things and dancing. I absolutely love pop music that you can’t help but dance to and also captures a really specific emotional state so I’m trying to get better at that. I’m not unique I don’t think: if I feel that way, others will too!
2. As a queer artist, how does your identity shape the themes and messages in your music?
My queerness is intrinsic to my musical (and general) identity. It was coming out and spending nights out in gay bars that exposed me to my now favorite artists, most of whom are LGBTQ+ themselves. I feel incredibly lucky to be queer and live in a place where my rights are protected. The experience of growing up queer and coming into your identity is a theme I’m planning to write about more, so watch this space! I feel like my brand of queerness manifests itself as joyful and a bit camp and I’m hoping that will come across in my music.
3. Could you tell us about your experience using technology as a Web 3.0 artist? How do you think it will change the future of music and art?
I came to web3 through my Masters and I’ve found exploring its possibilities as both an artist and a music consumer really exciting in terms of the future of marketing, community and bonus content. The transparency for artists on platforms like Hypery is so good and I hope there’ll be a move towards rebalancing streaming with web3 use and democratising music.
4. Seedling, what have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a pop artist, and how have you overcome them?
I think to be frank, working out what it is that I have to say. I’ve always absolutely loved songwriting but I am quite new to lyric writing. Starting out as seedling has ended up making me more reflective and purposeful in my words and actions, something I didn’t plan but I’m really grateful for! I’m not someone with crazy anecdotes and I find it awkward to write about my personal relationships but I really love dissecting a feeling or state of being. Grow me in a garden is about finding a place where you feel at your best; orion captures the feeling when you’re out by yourself at night and it feels like it’s just you in the world; and my new one is looking back at getting shut in during the pandemic and feeling like you’ve stalled. I hope this stuff might speak to others’ experiences as well as sounding alright!
