This week’s battle mage secrets focuses on the Going The Distance Ruleset.
One of the basic fundamental rulesets where only ranged monsters are eligible for battle. This ruleset does change how players approach battles as they can no longer depend on the traditional melee or no-attack tanks. The first thing I generally do with this ruleset is select the correct summoner. Summoners play a role in determining which monsters can be used and granting buffs or debuffs that influence battle results. Therefore, choosing the summoner is vital for maximizing the effectiveness of ranged units within this ruleset’s limitations. Summoners like Quix the Devious and Yodin Zaku offer advantages that complement the focus on ranged combat in the Going The Distance ruleset, making them valuable assets in battles governed by these rules. Another thing I consider is using monsters with Close Range and Return Fire abilities. Those monsters with Close Range are suitable candidates for playing substitute tanks because they will at least be able to attack from position one.

- Helios Matriarch (summoner): +1 speed and +1 additional Gladiator monster can be used.
- Gargoya Devil: Close Combat ability monster and therefore able to attack from position one.
- Venari Marksrat: Martyr ability to boost Gargoya Devil and Berix Snakeye.
- Berix Snakeye + Supply Runner + Dhampir Stalker + Drybone Raider: primary backline range damage that does the bulk of my teams damage and boosted with Double Strike and True Strike abilities.
This battle was always going to be a challenge, as I only had one monster in my collection with Close Combat ability, whereas my opposition had three monsters. The initial momentum of the battle looked good for my team, but as the battle wore on, my opposition’s overall better strategy and quality of monsters played turned the tide and they secured an easy victory.
On one hand, I appreciate how this ruleset adds a twist to the game by focusing only on ranged monsters. This limitation forces players to rethink their strategies and explore approaches making battles more complex. Additionally, this ruleset introduces nuances that players must navigate by prioritizing speed and utilizing Close Range and Return Fire abilities effectively. Another thing is that there are a lot of range monsters across the different editions and sets and generally are cheaper so if you need to purchase one or two range monsters, then it won’t break the bank.
